Inexpensive way to add a removable pom-pom to a hat

Adding a removable pom-pom can be a great way to add versality to crochet or knit hats. Pom-poms can be removed for washing or can be added when just wanting to give a hat a new look. * Please note that I do not recommend using these clips for children’s hats due to the choking risk. For children’s hats I recommend securely sewing the pom-pom to the hat or sewing a button to the inside of the hat.

What you’ll need:

  1. Pom-pom with built in elastic loop
  2. hair pin
  3. balloon tie or notched button

Slide hair pin through elastic loop on pom-pom

Push hair pin through top of hat

Flip hat inside out and pull the loop of the pom-pom into the inside of hat

Secure the loop to the balloon tie by wrapping the loop around the balloon tie so that loop fits snugly into the notches on the balloon tie

I order the balloon ties from amazon. The cost is approximately $12 for 100 balloon tie clips

Crochet Scrunchie

Materials: H (5 mm crochet hook), medium worsted weight yarn, elastic band

Pattern Notes: this scrunchie is made by crocheting a short tube in the round and then placing the elastic band around the middle of the tube

Foundation row: Chain 100, slip stitch for 1st chain to form a ring

Row 1. HDC in each chain around, slip stitch into top of 1st HDC to join (100 HDC). Work should be approximately 30 inches long/ 15 inches for half of tube

Row 2 – 8. HDC in each stitch around, join with a slip stitch into top of 1st HDC. After row 8 work should be approximately 3 inches tall

Put crochet tube through elastic so that elastic band is around the middle of the tube.

Fold bottom of tube up to meet top of tube, trapping elastic band in between the sides of tube.

Row 9. Use working yarn to single crochet along the top through both sides of the tube all the way around elastic. Cut yarn. Tie tails together and use crochet hook to pull tails inside the scrunchie to hide them.

Fitted Backloop Beanie – Adult Size

This is a variation of the backloop beanie. It is designed to be a fitted skull-cap style beanie.

Pattern Notes: This pattern is worked in back-and-forth rows. At the end of each row turn your work. At the beginning of each row chain 1. The chain 1 at the beginning of each row does NOT count as a stitch. The first row is worked into the back bump of the chain. For rows 2 – 42, all stitches (including the slip stitches) should be worked into the back loop only, EXCEPT for the last HDC in every even row and the first HDC stitch of every odd row (as indicated in pattern). To change size: if hat is too tall subtract a couple of stitches from starting chain. If hat is too wide subtract 2 rows from final row count. Always finish on an even row.

Materials:

  • Size H (5 mm) crochet hook
  • 1 Skein of #4 medium worsted weight yarn (I used Patons Canadiana for this hat)
  • Yarn needle and scissors
  • Optional: Hat Label

Row 1: Chain 41, HDC in back bump of 2nd chain from hook and in each of the next 34 chains, Slip stitch into the back bump of the last 5 chains (40 sts)

Row 2: Slip stitch into back loop of first 5 sts, HDC into back loop of next 34 sts, HDC into both loops of last st (40 sts)

Row 3: HDC into both loops of first st, HDC into back loop of next 34 sts, Slip stitch into back loop of last 5sts (40 sts)

Row 4 – 42: Repeat rows 2 & 3 for a total of 42 rows. Cut yarn and bind off leaving long tail.

Fold hat in half and close seam with whip stitch using long tail.

Weave long tail into top stitch of every other row all the way around the top of hat. Pull tight to close. Weave in ends.

Add optional hat label
