Fitted Backloop Beanie – Adult Size

This is a variation of the backloop beanie. It is designed to be a fitted skull-cap style beanie.

Pattern Notes: This pattern is worked in back-and-forth rows. At the end of each row turn your work. At the beginning of each row chain 1. The chain 1 at the beginning of each row does NOT count as a stitch. The first row is worked into the back bump of the chain. For rows 2 – 42, all stitches (including the slip stitches) should be worked into the back loop only, EXCEPT for the last HDC in every even row and the first HDC stitch of every odd row (as indicated in pattern). To change size: if hat is too tall subtract a couple of stitches from starting chain. If hat is too wide subtract 2 rows from final row count. Always finish on an even row.

Materials:

  • Size H (5 mm) crochet hook
  • 1 Skein of #4 medium worsted weight yarn (I used Patons Canadiana for this hat)
  • Yarn needle and scissors
  • Optional: Hat Label

Row 1: Chain 41, HDC in back bump of 2nd chain from hook and in each of the next 34 chains, Slip stitch into the back bump of the last 5 chains (40 sts)

Row 2: Slip stitch into back loop of first 5 sts, HDC into back loop of next 34 sts, HDC into both loops of last st (40 sts)

Row 3: HDC into both loops of first st, HDC into back loop of next 34 sts, Slip stitch into back loop of last 5sts (40 sts)

Row 4 – 42: Repeat rows 2 & 3 for a total of 42 rows. Cut yarn and bind off leaving long tail.

Fold hat in half and close seam with whip stitch using long tail.

Weave long tail into top stitch of every other row all the way around the top of hat. Pull tight to close. Weave in ends.

Add optional hat label
